Children Contributing to Their Own Learning
Contribution / Mana tangata is one of the strands of Te Whaariki, the Early Childhood curriculum in New Zealand. Each day at Buttercups, we observe children contributing to their own learning, as they participate in a variety of activities.
Today, the tamariki were working alongside their peers, turn-taking, communicating and collaborating on different ideas and activities. On one table we had some beautiful leaves to explore and with the insects added, it made for a fantastic hide-and-seek game, as the children decided to take turns hiding the insects!
A group of children participated in making playdough with Alison, which is a regular occurrence, as it is freshly made each week. The children are able to take turns stirring, while listening and discussing details about ingredients required, the colour choice for the week and measuring the different amounts together.
The contribution strand of Te Whaariki draws on children's abilities to contribute their own strengths and interests within the learning environment. We greatly value the contribution of each and every child at Buttercups Preschool!
